For Vognmand Hans Christensen ApS, ESG has become much more concrete after a course in the Green Transport Network at Billund Erhverv. Here, the company has received help and sparring to work systematically with ESG and green transition – and along the way, they have noticed that even small changes in daily operations can make a noticeable difference.
"We have gained a much greater understanding of the ESG area and can see that we are already doing some of the things that are part of the ESG work. At the same time, we have become aware of what can benefit our business in the future,” says Klaus Kristensen, director of Vognmand Hans Christensen ApS.
One realization in particular has made an impression: "It has made a big impression to have it specified what we can do ourselves, because even small adjustments have a big impact. For example, if we 'drive carefully' – that is, we slow down a bit, avoid idling and roll forward towards the next intersection – then we can save a lot. Both in terms of money and energy, but also in terms of the CO2 footprint we leave behind," says Klaus Kristensen.
From ESG to concrete documentation
As part of the networking process, companies work with an online tool that guides them through their ESG work step by step. The work is compiled into a document that constitutes the participants' first draft of an ESG report.
For Vognmand Hans Christensen ApS, the combination of the tool and the ongoing sparring has been important.
"The workshop and the associated online tool have guided us step by step, and the help from Billund Erhverv's business developers has been unique and very valuable. They have been with us at eye level and in a very patient way,” says director Klaus Kristensen.
The company has worked with transport, contractor transportation and delivery of sand and stone products for more than 50 years.
Klaus Kristensen is therefore also aware of the transport industry's carbon footprint. The work in the Green Transport Network has sharpened his focus on where the company itself can make a difference:
"We are very aware that we all have a responsibility, and we can all do better. When we work so purposefully with ESG, we see even more clearly that we need to think about how we work and how we drive trucks."
Ahead of upcoming requirements
The work has not only given the company greater knowledge about ESG. With the first draft of the ESG report, Vognmand Hans Christensen ApS has also been able to compile and document its efforts.
Although customers do not yet have specific requirements for documentation of sustainability and green transition, the company expects this to come.
"We are now at the forefront and ready with documentation of our ESG initiatives. We can use this in our dialogue with customers and partners,” says Klaus Kristensen.
